CARBAYU CANGAS P.D.O. RED WINE

Carbayu is a red wine protected by the Cangas Wine PDO made with grapes from Asturias vintages and specially bottled for Crivencar under the Carbayu brand. Made with the Mencia, Verdejo Negro, Carrasquín and Albarín negro grape varieties, this wine matures in American oak barrels for six months and then bottled to finish the aging process so that it can be served in optimal conditions.
The Cangas PDO wine is the only Asturias wine designation of origin also recognised as heroic viticulture due to the harsh growing conditions with slopes close to thirty degree incline, the height at which the vines are located and where it is impossible to use harvesting machines.
Wine production in Asturias dates back to the 9th century with the arrival of the Benedictine monks and was on the verge of disappearing at the end of the last century due to the loss of the local inhabitants’ roots. It has been thanks to the work of a small group of eight winemakers who little-by-little recovered these traditional wine-making techniques and who cork about 115,000 bottles per year.
